In certain regulatory contexts, a valid LEI code is required for Cayman Islands legal entities, most commonly when a fund, SPV, or holding company transacts with a counterparty that is subject to EU or UK reporting rules. Under MiFID II and UK MiFIR, an investment firm cannot execute a reportable transaction for an entity that does not hold an LEI, and counterparties reporting under EMIR or US CFTC swap rules will need the LEI of the Cayman Islands entity on the other side of the trade.
Banks, prime brokers, custodians and fund administrators also request an LEI during onboarding, and CIMA-registered mutual funds and private funds are frequently asked for one by their service providers. LEI24 is designed to support secure and efficient processing of these applications.
