Your LEI code stays with your entity for life. The registration behind it does not: LEI reference data is re-validated once a year, and that annual re-validation is what renewal means. Nothing about your 20-character code changes when you renew it.

If your LEI is not renewed by its renewal date, the registration status in the Global LEI Index changes from Issued to Lapsed. Renewing restores it. This page covers when your renewal is due, what renewal involves, what a lapsed status does and does not mean, and how to renew an LEI that is currently managed by someone else.

LEI Renewal Fees

Renewal termPriceEffective per year
1 year£50 excl. VAT£50
3 years£135 excl. VAT£45
5 years£200 excl. VAT£40

Our quoted renewal price includes the GLEIF fee, so the figure you see is the figure you pay before VAT. VAT is calculated at checkout, where you can enter a VAT number.

Renewing costs the same as registering a new LEI, and transferring a record to us is free. If you manage a mix of new and existing entities, you can compare the cost of all three options side by side before you decide how to handle them.

How to Renew Your LEI Number Online

Renewal is a short online process. You confirm data rather than supply it, because your record is retrieved from the Global LEI Index and displayed for you to check.

Step 1: Enter your LEI or company name

Your record is retrieved and shown on screen, including legal name, LEI code, registration status, jurisdiction, registered address and the LEI issuer currently managing your record.

Step 2: Confirm your details and signing authority

Check the retrieved data and confirm you are authorised to act for the entity, such as a director, company secretary or someone holding power of attorney. If anything in your reference data has changed, this is where it is corrected.

Step 3: Choose your renewal term and pay

Select a 1, 3 or 5 year plan and complete payment. Your renewal is then submitted to the managing LEI issuer for validation.

Once validation is complete, your renewed record is reflected in the Global LEI Index with an updated next renewal date. You can also generate an LEI certificate badge to display your LEI on your own website.

Processing time depends on how quickly the LEI issuer can validate your data against the relevant registry. Straightforward UK limited company renewals are usually completed quickly; records needing supporting documents take longer.

Renewing an LEI Code Held With Another Provider

You can renew here whether or not LEI24 currently manages your record. If your LEI sits with a different provider, we bring the record across as part of the renewal, at no additional cost, and we deal with your outgoing provider on your behalf.

Your LEI code and historical record remain intact; responsibility for managing and validating the record moves to the new LEI issuer.

If your renewal is not due for a while and you would rather move now and renew later, you can transfer your LEI on its own and pay nothing until your renewal date arrives.

When Is Your LEI Renewal Due?

Your renewal date is not a date you choose. It is a field in your own LEI record called Next Renewal Date, which follows your annual renewal cycle.

The LEI Regulatory Oversight Committee requires that renewal takes place no later than one year after the previous verification of your data. That is why the cycle is annual regardless of provider or plan length.

How to Find Your Next Renewal Date

Enter your LEI code or company name in the checker at the top of this page and your next renewal date is returned along with your current status. If you want to check a record you do not manage, or look up several entities at once, you can search LEI in the global register free of charge at any time.

How Early Can You Renew?

You can submit your renewal before the Next Renewal Date. Through LEI24, renewal can be started up to 60 days early.

Renewing early is worth doing if your renewal date falls near a period when you expect to be reporting, onboarding with a new counterparty or otherwise relying on an active record, because it takes the date off your hands well ahead of the deadline.

With LEI24, your renewal date stays fixed to the same date each year. That means the days between your early renewal and your original renewal date are added to the new term rather than absorbed by it. Renew a full 60 days early and you are covered for roughly 14 months before your next renewal comes round, not 12.

What Happens If Your LEI Lapses

If your LEI is not renewed by its renewal date, the registration status in the Global LEI Index changes from Issued to Lapsed.

It is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean, because it is widely misdescribed.

A lapsed LEI remains valid. GLEIF’s position is that the status indicates the registration is behind schedule for re-validation against third-party sources. It does not by itself mean the information recorded for your entity is wrong or out of date. Your code is not withdrawn, and you do not apply for a new one.

What lapsed status does affect is how counterparties, banks and reporting systems treat your record. It is visible to anyone who looks your entity up, and it can prompt additional checks during onboarding, KYC or periodic review. In some reporting contexts it blocks submissions outright, which the next section covers.

Renewing a Lapsed or Expired LEI

A lapsed record is renewed, not replaced. Each legal entity may only ever hold one LEI, so applying for a new code is not an option and is not necessary. Renewing restores the registration status and sets a new next renewal date, and your existing code and entity history carry across unchanged.

There is no separate process for a lapsed record. You renew it the same way you would renew one that is still current.

What a Lapsed LEI Means for UK Reporting

The effect of a lapsed status depends on which role your entity plays in a report, and UK rules are specific about this.

Under the current UK EMIR reporting framework and FCA validation rules, the LEI status of Counterparty 1 and the entity responsible for reporting must be Issued, Pending transfer or Pending archival for certain action types. The FCA’s UK EMIR reporting Q&As explain the LEI status requirements in more detail.

In practice this means a lapsed LEI is most likely to cause a problem when your entity is the reporting counterparty or the entity responsible for reporting, rather than the counterparty being reported against.

Separately, under UK MiFIR, investment firms may be unable to execute a trade on behalf of an eligible client that does not have an LEI. The FCA sets out the requirement on its UK MiFIR legal entity identifiers page.

Whether an LEI applies to your entity at all depends on what you do and how you are structured. Our guide to who needs an LEI number covers the common UK cases.

Renewal, Update or Transfer: Which One Do You Need?

These three are often confused. They do different things and are not alternatives to each other.

PurposeFrequency
LEI renewalRe-validate your LEI reference data with the managing LEI issuerAnnual
LEI updateAmend your reference data after your entity details changeAs needed
LEI transferMove your record to a different managing LEI issuerOptional

If your legal name, registered address, legal form or parent relationships have changed, that is an LEI update and it should be submitted when the change happens rather than held until your renewal date. Renewal and update can be handled together if your renewal is also due.

Multi-Year LEI Renewal Plans

We offer 1, 3 and 5 year renewal plans, and the longer terms reduce your effective annual cost.

A multi-year plan does not remove the annual re-validation, and no provider can offer that. Your reference data still has to be verified once a year, because the LEI Regulatory Oversight Committee requires it. What a multi-year plan does is put those yearly cycles in our hands and settle them in one payment, so you are not repeating an administrative task and a checkout every twelve months.

We also send renewal reminders ahead of your next renewal date, and entities managed with us can be handled through a single portal rather than tracked separately.

What You Need to Renew Your LEI

Less than most people expect. Your record is retrieved from the Global LEI Index and displayed for you to confirm, so for most UK limited companies there is nothing to gather and nothing to upload. You need your LEI code or company name, and confirmation that you are authorised to act for the entity.

Supporting documents may be requested where the LEI issuer cannot validate your data against a public registry. This typically applies when:

  • The entity is a trust, where an HMRC return or trust deed confirming the name and address may be needed
  • The entity is registered on a registry that is not publicly available, where a certificate of incorporation or registry documents may be needed
  • Direct or ultimate parent relationships have changed since your last renewal
  • The record has been lapsed for some time and reference data needs fuller re-verification

If your renewal falls into one of these cases, our team will tell you what is needed rather than leaving you to guess.

LEI Renewal FAQs

Submission takes a few minutes. Validation by the managing LEI issuer is what determines the total time, and it depends on whether your data can be verified against a public registry. Straightforward UK limited company renewals are usually completed quickly. Renewals needing supporting documents take longer.

Yes. A lapsed record is renewed rather than replaced, and there is no separate process. Renewing restores the registration status and sets a new next renewal date. Your LEI code and entity history are unaffected.

No. Your 20-character code is permanent and stays with your entity. Renewal re-validates the reference data attached to it and updates your next renewal date.

Yes. Renewal is a re-validation exercise, not a correction exercise. The point is that your data has been checked against third-party sources within the last twelve months, which is why it is required even when nothing has changed.

If you stop renewing, the registration status changes to Lapsed and stays there. The code is not deleted and remains in the Global LEI Index against your entity. There is no cancellation process and nothing further to pay. If you later need an active LEI, you renew the same code.
